Garage Doors Lancashire is a family owned business established for over 30 years.
Our office staff are always on hand to give honest, independent advice on all makes and types of garage doors. Our fitting teams are all headed by an experienced fitter. In fact three of our senior fitters have worked for us for over 20 years each.
Peter Chester founded Garage Doors (Lancs) after spending his early years at sea with the Merchant Navy, and the Company began as a small outfit in Wigan, and has now grown to a two branch business employing 20 people.
The Company has outlets in Bamber Bridge and Nelson, and is a real family affair with Peter's wife, three daughters and son-in law all working in the firm. Originally the Company fitted doors locally for both private and trade customers. As recommendation passed from one customer to another, the company now also works for a number of large developers including Redrow Homes, Fairclough Homes, Bellway and Morris.
Housing over 60 doors Garage Doors (Lancs) have one of the largest showrooms in the UK. All types and many makes are displayed with a combination of working models and static panels available. Most customers will make sure they visit before making a final decision as to which garage door they want. As a garage door can account for up to 25% of your homes front elevation it is important to choose a style you like, and will still like in 15 or 20 years time.
In 1993 the Company became a founder member of the Association of Garage Door Specialists, a trade association dedicated specifically to the garage door industry and supported by all the leading manufacturers. Since the incorporation in 2008 of the AGDS and the Door and Hardware Federation the Company has remained at the forefront of the industry with Julie taking on the role of chair in the Garage Door Installer Group.
Peter took the business over some thirty five years ago having served in the merchant navy since school. He'd reached the rank of Chief Officer but his wife, Sheilagh was keen he spent more time at home with her and their children. Initially the business was located in Wigan, employed two people, and was linked to a number of other garage door companies across the UK. Peter asked Sheilagh to help man the telephones for six months part time until he could get someone else in to help. Within a few years the individual companies agreed to become stand alone enterprises and Peter moved his premise to James Street, Bamber Bridge. One of his fitters, Paul moved with him, and is still with him. Two years later, and with Sheilagh still working full time the office and showroom moved to Aspden Street. The number of fitters had steadily increased to cope with the increased business and more help was required on the administration front. By 1995 the business employed ten people, and by 2001 this had nearly doubled to nineteen.
Julie completed a business studies degree prior to joining the family firm. She is responsible for the financial side of the business, and additionally for Health and Safety. She has recently been voted in as Chairman of the DHF Garage Door Installer group , having served on the Committee of The Association of Garage Door Specialists for some time as well as serving as Chairman twice.

Gail is Peter's middle daughter and is responsible for planning all the work. She is very technically able and having an artistic nature is good at visualising how your garage door will look. All our trade and developer enquiries are handled by Gail.
Beckie runs the part time showroom in Nelson, and organises the jobs we undertake for both Pendle and Burnley Borough Councils. Based at the head office in Bamber Bridge she is also our Transport Manager with responsibility for keeping all our vans moving, and the warehouse running smoothly.
Tom has worked for us since Spring 2000. He is a cheerful member of staff, and is capable and willing. He has recently completed a NVQ in specialist installations – the latest training course relating to garage doors
Paul is our longest serving employee having worked for us since the early days in Wigan, and he's not 50 yet. Paul's passion is Wigan Rugby League, and all his holidays are spent watching them play. His wife Karen, and two teenage daughters are used to it by now! A joiner by trade, he is a neat worker, and is often complimented on his attention to detail.
Paul is another long serving employee. He worked for us once, left for a short while, and missed us so much he came back! And that was over 20 years ago. Paul and Kay's son Gareth has recently joined the air force, something he has dreamt of since being a child, leaving them at home with their four dogs.
Shane is "our man in the Midlands." He and wife Kim have three young boys and when not at work, Shane is always busy with his family. There's never a dull moment when Shane is around, and his cheerful approach means he has built up an excellent working relationship with the site managers in his area.
Martin started working for us as an apprentice, working with his Dad who was one of our senior fitters at the time. He completed his joinery qualifications, and has now built up over 25 years experience with us and is one of our most technically able employees. Martin and partner, Janet, have three children.
Steve was initially employed via North Lancs Training, in May 2000, and undertook an NVQ in joinery on a day release basis. Having completed this training in 2003, he is a conscientious and capable employee.
Chris has been employed by us for the shortest length of time, but has still managed to clock up over 5 years service, and has become a valued member of the team.
Steve Roe is another team leader, and is Martins brother-in-law. His daughter Natasha is a keen footballer, and plays for Preston North End Under 12's Womens football team.
Warren is our works manager. Originally a DJ, he started work for us over fifteen years ago as a fitter, and for the last five years has undertaken the estimating, visiting customers homes and quoting. He is married to Gail, one of Peter's daughters. Warren is a keen golfer and whilst the DJ'ing is a thing of the past, he still occasionally performs at charity events as a singer.
All our employees have completed a number of relevant industry training courses and all are holders of Construction Skills Cards, Site Safety and First Aid (Appointed Persons) qualifications.
All the senior fitters have attended various manufacturers training days and have passed the Association of Garage Door Specialists Wiring Course
